The exhibition project "Guns N' Bones" presents a dialogue of two jewellers Bety K. Majerníková and Kristýna Španihelová. In their collections they both work with women's issues intertwining at various levels beauty with suffering, symbols of the animate and the inanimate, irony and criticism. Thus, visually "pretty" and aesthetic jewellery become the carriers of serious topics.

In her critical series entitled WRAF Bety K.Majerníková reflects the omnipresent "war" of today's women with the world surrounding them. On one hand she criticizes that nowadays the society expects from women unrealistic results in many aspects. On the other hand she also aims criticism at women because they themselves put up with these unrealistic criteria and strive to comply with them. However, they often do not fight for themselves, instead, they fight against each other, against their interests, health and their own bodies. The morphology of jewellery - objects in this series originate in contours of weapons, grenades but also in hearts or flowers. Black pearls applied to perforated spots on the pieces of jewellery are a symbolic reminder of a gunshot - a bullet - an attack. They are made out of different material - hematite, marble, glass, steel and pearl-shell.

Kristýna Španihelová presents a collection of bone jewellery from the cycle Život [i.e. Life] ANIMA. In her series of jewellery Kristýna primarily deals with the growth and development of feminine nature and principle.

Anima combines in itself the deeper and rationally imperceptible mystery of life. Carl Gustav Jung dealt with the topic of Anima in his work "The Idea of Redemption in Alchemy" and the author drew her inspiration from his theories as well. Jewellery from the cycle Life ANIMA are made of bleached bones which complement the carved-out silver lace work, synthetic pearls, gold foil, pyrites, coral and beads.

Ateliér S+M+L_XL Kov a Šperk, je jediný svojho druhu na Slovensku a patrí medzi najmladšie ateliéri na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení v Bratislave. Založil ho v roku 1990 svetoznámy slovenský šperkár Anton Cepka. Od roku 1995 ho vedie známy architekt a šperkár Karol Weisslechner.Koncepcia ateliéru je zameranú široko-spektrálne, od drobných šperkových artefaktov cez tvarovanie úžitkových predmetov, až po veľkorozmerné práce reagujúce na konkrétne architektonické priestory. Ateliér na základe tejto filozofie dostal názov S+M+L_XL /S-small, M-medium, L-large, XL-extra large/. Zámerom výuky je poskytnúť budúcim autorom šperku široké spektrum informácií, a vyvolať v nich túžbu byť tvorcom ktorý považuje za svoj cieľ snúbenie intelektu a kreatívnej remeselnej zručnosti

Metal and jewellery studio „S+M+L_XL“ is part of the Applied Arts Department of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. It is one of the youngest studios there. It was founded by worldwide known jeweller artist Anton Cepka in 1990. Since 1995 the head of this studio is architect and jeweller Karol Weisslechner. Under his leadership, the education has focused on wider scope. This includes jewellery, tableware, interior objects and other smaller or bigger-scale objects, crafted from various materials. Students are encouraged to take an innovative approach, using contemporary and traditional materials and techniques to make objects with an intellectual and emotional impact. Emphasis is also placed on the process of making as a way to continually explore and develop a concept, from original idea to finished object.

This dandy project came up as a crazy idea of me and my colleague Bety sitting in our favorite coffee house and having little brainstorming :). Our notion was that many people can work in tandem on one piece of jewellery. The inspiration for the Schmuck Wander project was born from our experiences from creative symposiums but we shift it into new locations by invention of traveling jewells. We started with fifteen pieces made by Slovak jewellers who thereafter posted it to some friend from abroad. The next link in the chain is another creator, so the ultimate jewell is created by two, three or four jewell makers. Finally Schmuck Wander project joined 47 authors from 11 different countries. The project was running unexpectedly. We missed few pieces bumming somewhere around the world before the termination, but we already have thirteen pieces back home. In these days just two pieces are lost but still wanted.

Jewells and objects which were created in cooperation of some number of are very interesting, but the point is that each one has its own story just as well as its own transit network. We succeed to join participants from many different countries in one astonishing mission. We hope all jewellery artist who joined our project had great fun with it and that they will be looking forward to the next round.

Each one of 15 jewells has passport to memorize its journey and its creators. Likewise catalogue conception is inspired by passport ;)
So are recent wishes are that the project will continue in the future and that there are more enthusiastic artists who would like to participating in it.

Karol Weisslechner

Karol Weisslechner’s interests include jewellery, objects, installation as well as interior architecture, design and scenography. Works of Karol Weisslechner can be found in state and private collections in Slovakia as well as abroad. He is the senior lecturer in the S+M+L_XL Metal and Jewellery Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and he simultaneously works as Chancellor of the Academy.
Karol Weisslechner is a longtime propagator of authorial jewellery and its conception as an artistic artefact. Apart from lecturing and managing the Academy he regularly takes part in creative symposia in Slovakia as well as abroad. He also organizes international symposia on artistic jewellery, exhibitions, expert colloquia and study tours.

Venuje sa voľnej tvorbe v oblasti šperku, objektu, inštalácie, ako aj interiérovej architektúre, dizajnu a scénografii. Diela K. Weisslechnera sú zastúpené v štátnych a súkromných zbierkach na Slovensku i v zahraničí.
Je vedúcim pedagógom v Ateliéri S+M+L_XL kov a šperk na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení v Bratislave. Toho času pôsobí na VŠVU aj vo funkcii rektora.
Karol Weisslechner patrí medzi neúnavných propagátorov autorského šperku a jeho chápania ako umeleckého artefaktu. Venuje sa prednáškovej a organizačnej činnosti. Sám sa pravidelne zúčastňuje tvorivých sympózií na Slovensku aj v zahraničí. Organizuje medzinárodné sympóziá umeleckého šperku, výstavy, odborné kolokviá a študijné cesty.

The Housewives

The Housewives is a project that started sometime in 2002 and still goes on. It’s interactivity between German jewellerer Steffany Klemp and Slovak jewellerer Bety Majernikova. Authors are cooperating in creation of art/jewellery pieces, and present them on the ironical way, as pieces made at home in the free time. It is a commentary on still running categorization of art creation of “high art” and “low art”.

The Housewives je projekt ktorý vznikol niekde v roku 2002 a odvtedy kontinuálne pokračuje. Ide o spoluprácu dvoch výtvarníčiek, Steffany Klamp z Nemecka a Bety Majerníkovej zo Slovenska. Autorky spolupracujú na spoločných prácach, a ironicky ich prezentujú ako diela ktoré vznikajú „ v domácnosti“. Je to ich komentár na neustále kategorizovanie výtvarných disciplín na vyššie a nižšie.

Let’s shoot yourself with jewellery... is name of exhibition of Bety Majernikova, it was located in Slovak National Gallery in March 2007. The aim of the author was to present jewellery in new way, to catch the attention of audience, that doesn’t usually look for contemporary jewellery. The concept was simple: visitors could come and as soon as they put any of jewels on them they become the object of interest. People could choose, try and photograph themselves with a piece of their choice.

Let’s shoot yourself with jewellery je názov akcie Bety Majerníkovej, ktorá sa uskutočnila v Slovenskej národnej galérii. Išlo o pokus prezentovať šperky iným spôsobom, autorke išlo o to, aby bola prezentácia zaujímavá aj pre publikum ktoré bežne nevyhľadáva výstavy súčasného šperku. Vystavené šperky boli priamo prístupné publiku. Ľudia si mohli vyberať skúšať a fotiť sa zo šperkom podľa vlastného výberu.

CzechoSlovak jeweller - Kristýna Španihelová

Kristýna Španihelová (CZ) Študovala u profesora Karola Weisslechera na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení v Bratislave v ateliéri Kov a Šperk. Absolvovala študijné pobyty v šperkárskom ateliéri Vysokej Umeleckoprumyslovej školy v Prahe (CZ) a štúdium dizajnu na Akadémií v Lublane (SLO). Jej práce boli ocenené niekoľkými cenami (Kruhy na vode 2007, Slovenský šperk 2005,2006…), a vystavuje ich doma aj v zahraničí. Kristýna predstavuje kolekciu kostených šperkov z cyklu Život ANIMA. V sérii šperkov sa primárne zaoberá rastom a vývojom ženskej podstaty a ženským princípom. Anima je spojením hlbšieho a racionálne nepostihnuteľného tajomstva života. Šperky z cyklu Život ANIMA sú zhotovené z vybielených kostí, ktoré dopĺňajú vyrezané strieborné krajky, syntetické perly, plátkové zlato, pyrity, koral a korálky.

Kristýna Španihelová studied under the guidance of professor Karol Weisslechner at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in the atelier of Metal and Jewellery. She took part in academic internship programmes in the jewellery atelier at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (CZ) and studied design at the Academy in Ljubljana (SLO). Her works not only received various prizes (design competition Rings in Water 2007, Slovak jewellery competition Slovenský šperk 2005,2006…) but are on display in her home country and abroad as well. Kristýna presents a collection of bone jewellery from the cycle Život [i.e. Life] ANIMA.
